Policing the (migrant) crisis: Stuart Hall and the defence of whiteness

Over the last two decades, European border regime has become subject of a growing body scholarship in critical security studies. In this article, I draw on Stuart Hall’s work racialized policing, authoritarian populism and conjunctural analysis to argue that literature paid insufficient attention close relationship between racism, capitalism state violence. Writing at dawn Thatcherism neoliberal globalization, Hall theorized growth repressive structures as revanchist response breakdowns racial hegemony. Revisiting these insights, article argues ongoing expansion is hegemonic strategy crisis management.
